Where did summer disappear to?
The nights are now drawing in and we have managed to harvest enough grass (hopefully) and ensile it for the livestock for the coming winter months.
We are busy getting things ready for the cattle coming in for the winter, which hopefully won’t happen for a few weeks yet.
The autumn sheep sales are all on at the moment. This is the time of year when the hill farmers sell there breeding lambs or Shearlings (18month old) for replacements for the lowland farmers flocks.
These together with the rest of the breeding flock will be put to the Tup or Ram the result, lambs next spring.
The autumn colours will soon be with us as the trees loose there summer colour and we slip into the autumn months.
A beautiful sight ,which is well worth a visit if you get the chance.

Summer at High Bracken Hall

As we enter the summer months the cattle are all out grazing, and taking in the welcome sunshine. The first crop of grass has been cut and is in the silage pit, in preparation for the winter months when the cattle are kept inside, and our small acreage of hay should be in the barn very soon weather permitting.
At this time of year I try to catch up with the walling and other jobs that keep the farm, and land looking well kept through the summer months. This also keeps my 93 year old farther busy, who still comes and works on the farm for a few hours every day. We call the quad bike his
farm mobility scooter!
I am also a keen micro light pilot so when I have a spare
minute I try to go flying, there are few things that are more impressive
than the Lake District, but the Lake District on a summer evening from the
air is something else.

Spring is in the air...

New lambs are arriving everyday, don't forget to watch Lambing Live starting Monday 4th April on BBC 2
