Kirkby Lonsdale

A charming market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales set in the Lune Valley. The area has inspired artists such as Constable and Turner with Norman Churches and 17th/18th century buildings.

The scenic beauty of the River Lune is spectacular and, the town is known for its ‘Ruskin’s View’ (pictured here). John Ruskin was inspired by the humble town of Kirkby Lonsdale; citing its surrounding areas as ‘one of the most beautiful in England’.

Kirkby Lonsdale hosts many events, including a Christmas Fair. The town also boasts independently owned shops, boutiques and delis to please the most discerning of shoppers. With its 18th Century inns, cafes and fantastic restaurants it has something for everyone.

Kendal

Kendal is an old market town situated in South Cumbria. Located just outside one of the most beautiful parts of the country – the English Lake District, it is just a short drive from our lodges. Kendal is also within 30 minutes drive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it a perfect base for walkers and sightseers alike. The town’s unique blend of history, culture and shopping makes it a very popular destination for visitors to Cumbria.

There are attractions for all ages; fascinating museums, modern and historic art and a variety of leisure facilities. The shopping is diverse with many high street names. But the town is known particularly for its specialist shops – quality independent traders offering a range of goods unrivalled anywhere in the Lake District.

Windermere

Lake Windermere, is 10.5 miles long – one mile wide and 220 feet deep. It is the largest natural lake in England and the most famous in Cumbria, fed by numerous rivers. The Romans built their fort of Galava at its northern end (Waterhead) and it has always been an important waterway for the movement of heavy materials.

The village of Windermere expanded around  Windermere railway station, about a mile and a half from the lake. The village was originally called Birthwaite, and it was actually the railway company who decided to re-name the station after the lake. A beautiful place to visit and less than 16 miles from our Cumbria lodges.

Bowness

Bowness-on-Windermere is located in the south of the Lake District in Cumbria. Due to its position on the banks of Lake Windermere the town has become a tourist honey pot. Although their mutual growth has caused them to become one large settlement, the main hub of Bowness is distinct from Windermere – as the two still have distinguishable town centres.

There are a large selection of adventure activity companies, guides and instructors for all abilities based on and around Lake Windermere. Being so close to our Cumbria lodges, the world of outdoor adventure is right on our doorstep.
