Spring jobs on the Farm are almost complete, so it’s time to sit back …

Life on our farm, nestling at the edge of the Lake District, has been extremely busy these past few weeks, but thankfully lambing has now almost come to an end. Our human residents at High Bracken Lodges have a birds-eye view from their veranda, watching our Texel X lambs gathering into groups, running and frolicking in the spring sunshine – and there’s the occasional Hebredian thrown into the mix. Perhaps he fancies his chances at the ‘whacky races’!

The grass in the fields is now beginning to grow faster and the cattle are awaiting ‘turnout day’ after their long winter inside. Any farmer will tell you how excited the cattle get when they run out into the open, lush meadows for the first time, after being kept inside all winter.
Our farmhouse environment with its buildings, people and animals creates a truly special and genuine atmosphere and even though many of the main buildings are of the old Lakeland style, the new wooden lodges blend in perfectly and are situated a little distance away in their own peace and quiet.
Spring work on the farm is almost up to speed now, the hedging is finished, the fields are rolled and we are continuing with the battle to maintain the drystone walls!
Today we have sighting of our first swallows. There’s a saying, ‘one swallow doesn’t make a summer’ but we’ve seen two, so we reckon we’re in with a good chance!
